Haunted Hotels of the East

For most of us, hotel stays come with check-in and check-out dates. But many lodgings claim to have guests who refuse to leave, lingering in the rooms or on the grounds long after their scheduled stay. Check in to one of these hotels if you want to spend Halloween with real ghosts. And why limit it to Halloween? Since the spirits in these establishments are not staged seasonal events, ghost hunters can spend the night with specters year-round.

loganinn.jpgLogan Inn, New Hope, Pennsylvania
This 18th century tavern-turned-inn has a reputation for hosting numerous colonial-era spirits. The restless ghost of a Revolutionary War soldier has been spotted marching around the grounds.  Guests also frequently see the specter of a little girl wandering the parking lot, but no one is sure who she is. Glowing orbs hovering in the lobby and hallways are also reported.

Room Six is the permanent residence of Emily, the long-dead mother of a former owner of the Logan. The room has an inexplicable scent of lavender that is attributed to Emily, and she is rumored to alter the thermostat and move guests' luggage around the room.

Hotel Chelsea, New York City, New York
Many writers, artists and musicians have found inspiration in the Hotel Chelsea, which has been described as a "cauldron of creativity". But the hotel, erected in 1884, is also known for its paranormal activity.

The hotel's most famous spirit its probably that of Sex Pistols band member Sid Vicious, who is suspected of stabbing his girlfriend to death in Room 100. It seems that Sid's ghost enjoys riding the east elevator. Other eerie presences include that of Thomas Wolfe, especially on the 8th floor, as well as Dylan Thomas, who infamously drank away his final days at the Chelsea. All told, about half of the Chelsea's rooms are occupied by otherworldly figures.

The Inaugural Ball of President Calvin Coolidge seems to have left a lasting impact on the Mayflower Hotel (right). Coolidge arrived late to the 1925 ball, as he was mourning the death of his 16-year-old son. Legend has it that every year on January 20 the lights dim and flicker at 10 p.m., the time the first guests were announced at the ball. Around the same time, one elevator stops on the eighth floor and refuses to move to the lobby until 10:15 p.m. - the approximate time Coolidge is reported to have left his room to attend the ball.

Omni Shoreham Hotel, Washington, D.C.
One room at this hotel has earned the title "Ghost Suite" after it was the scene of two mysterious deaths. The first, in 1930, was executive housekeep Juliette Brown, who apparently awoke at 4 a.m. feeling ill and died while reaching for the phone. The second was the hotel owner's adopted child, Helen. Guests and staff report seeing housekeeping carts move and televisions and lights come on suddenly and inexplicably in the middle of the night, while guests in neighboring rooms have heard loud noises coming from the suite while it was supposed to be empty.

Bower's Harbor Inn, Traverse City, Michigan
Bower's Harbor was built in the 1880s and remodeled in the 1920s as a summer escape for Chicago lumber baron J.W. Stickney and his wife, Genevive. In recent years, the building, now a restaurant, has gained fame as the home to Genevive's ghost. According to legend,  Genevive fell into a deep depression after her husband's death when she learned that,  though she inherited the property, her husband had left the remainder of his wealth to a hired nurse. Genevive eventually hung herself from the beams of the elevator shaft and, since her death, there have been reports of lights suddenly turning on, mirrors and paintings falling off walls, and the appearance of a blurry female figure in guests' photographs.

The Fairmont Algonquin, St. Andrews-by-the-Sea, New Brunswick
Guests who arrive at the Fairmont in the winter are often greeted by an older gentleman, dressed as a bellman, who welcomes them and assists with their luggage. While this may sound normal, the Fairmont does not employ a bellman in the winter and the gentleman doesn't match the description of anyone on staff. Well, not anyone on the current staff.

Oh my! I would love to visit here. The Logan Inn sounds like a fun experience! Since I travel so often overseas, I sometimes forget the wonderful experiences we have waiting for us right on our own doorsteps!

This would definitely fit in my budget travel mode.
