- Last week, officials voted to have the 1.3-mile stretch of road that runs through Stonehenge permanently closed. The move was made in part because UNESCO has expressed concerns about the 5,000-year-old monument's "shabby" surroundings. English Heritage, which manages Stonehenge, will build a £28 million visitors center and parking lot where the road once was. Construction is scheduled to be complete before the 2012 London Olympics.
