A few lucky people had the chance to climb the 354 steps to the top of Lady Liberty's crown this Fourth of July for the first time since it was closed to the public after September 11, 2001. The coveted tickets went up for sale on June 13th, and tickets for the holiday weekend sold out within two hours, our own National Geographic News reports. So how can you get your hands on a pass to the top? Find out after the jump.
Visitors can reserve Crown Tickets up to one year in advance by calling 1-877-Lady-Tix (877-523-9849) or going online to www.statuecruises.com.
These tickets must be purchased in addition to regular Reserve Tickets
for an extra $3, putting the total cost at $15 for adults, $13 for
seniors, and $8 for children (ages 4-12). A Crown Ticket will also give
you access to the Museum at the base of the statue and the Pedestal
Observation Deck, as well as priority entry to the Security Screening
Facility at the departure point.
Families who already have plans to visit the Statue of Liberty this summer should not get their hopes set on touring the crown. When I ventured online to check the next available ticket date, the calendar pointed me to September 3rd with only two remaining time slots to choose from.
Crown Tickets will be difficult to secure and will come with a few restrictions. Buyers are limited to four tickets and only one purchase in a four-month period. Additionally, the names of all ticket holders are required at the point-of-purchase, and each person is asked to show a matching picture ID upon entry.
It may take me months to get to the top so if you are lucky enough to go, upload pictures to our Flickr account. We can't wait to see the spectacular view!
