Plan My Trip: Puerto Rico This Weekend

La Vida Dulce en Puerto Rico

The allure of discount airfare, coupled with a reunion with high school friends, means I'm heading out this weekend on a jaunt to Puerto Rico, and I'm of course ready and willing to hear your tips. I'm looking forward to visiting the UNESCO site of Old San Juan, but am sure that you have suggestions for great restaurants, beaches, drives, and sites. I'm taking suggestions, and tour guides are always welcome. As always, I'm looking forward to hearing your advice!

I don't know if you ever watched Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights (I sure did), but a lot of the club scenes were filmed at this place:

Rumba
152 Calle San Sebastián
San Juan
Puerto Rico
Tel: 787 725 4407

I went there when I was in San Juan a few years ago and had a great time. A lot of great salsa dancers having fun.

I have been to Puerto Rico a handful of times and I have family there. My three choices for places to hit are: Old San Juan (which you are doing), El Morro (an old fortress) and El Yunque (a very cool rain forest).

If you're a meat eater, Guavate for the roast pig sounds exceptional:

Also, El Yunque rainforest is spectacular. Much prettier than I'd thought, and a wonderful quiet alternative to the beaches.

If you're up for surfing, I hear Rincon has an great break.

You must drink the coffee. Best coffee in the world bar none. As Christian said, El Yunque is spectacular.

Go kayaking at the bioluminescent area in Fajardo. This is a night adventure, but the most memorable you will have. You kayak through mangroves and then to an area that you can swim in bioluminescent waters.

I've been in Puerto Rico only once in my life but the treat we received at the courtyard by Marriot on Isla Verde beach was great, I will be back anytime. http://www.club.royal-holiday.com/index.php?fuseaction=home.resort&id=120
