Radar: What's Happening in Travel

Ryanair Horizon
Needless to say, some Flybe Airlines passengers in the U.K. had quite a ride this week. Upon descending in France, the pilot on a Flybe Airlines flight from Cardiff to Paris told the passengers:

'Unfortunately I'm not qualified to land the plane in Paris. They are asking for a level two qualification and I only have a level five. We'll have to fly back.'

At least Cardiff is on the same continent. Can you imagine if a pilot from Los Angeles to Paris told his passengers the same thing?

Car rental giant Hertz introduces a car-sharing program in New York City, London, and Paris. For a $50 annual membership fee (plus $10/hour), drivers can rent cars by the hour or by the day. Hertz plans to add 20 cities by the end of 2009.

Mile-High Wi-Fi: Beginning this week, Delta (and merger Northwest) Airlines will be adding wireless access to its fleet. Wireless use will cost $9.95 for flights less than three hours in length, and $12.95 for all flights longer than three hours. Delta hopes to give the majority of its flights wireless by May 31. But, fear not: both internet phone calls and, ahem, inappropriate sites will be blocked.

In Obamauguration news, Jennifer Lynn has published a very handy book on where to use the bathroom (or the WC, the loo, the toilet... take your pick) in our nation's capital. With a low ratio of toilets to anticipated visitors on that cold January weekend, the guide could prove to be very useful, indeed. You can get the book on e-Bay here. (And check back soon for more Inauguration tips from Traveler!)

Long-haul Australian budget carrier V Australia is offering round-trip flights from Los Angeles to Sydney for as little as $780 for travel between February 27 and September. Across the other pond, RyanAir recently announced plans for discount flights across the Atlantic, for as little as £8.

Gamblers delight: beginning in February, Acetrain will offer high-speed train service between Atlantic City and New York City. The trains will run on weekends only, and ticket prices start at $50. After Obama takes the train from Philly to D.C., maybe he'll want a weekend getaway in Atlantic City, too.

Emirates airline may have one of the "greenest" flights to hit the skies (on a flight from Dubai to San Francisco, the company saves 13,000 pounds of fuel by cutting 250 nautical miles off the 7,400-mile trip), but it seems its other practices aren't nearly as liberal-minded. According to the Wall Street Journal, under Dubai law the airline's flight attendants cannot be pregnant if not married, nor openly gay; likewise, they cannot be seen smoking or eating while in uniform.

London's National Theatre just announced that it will continue its seven-year-long trend of selling tickets for £10 to shows from February to May 2009. Likewise, our very own Kennedy Center just expanded their college discount program--tickets for $10--to those ages 17-25. Which means that a good portion of the IT staff can now afford some theatrical culture every once in a while.
