About This Blog

Gorilla Face
The non-human Great Apes are found in 21 countries in Africa and two countries in South East Asia.  All great apes - except humans - are in decline due to habitat loss, occasioned by illegal and unsustainable logging, expansion of agricultural land as well as illegal hunting and disease. Unless we raise awareness and galvanize support for conservation efforts, the great apes may become extinct within our lifetime.

WildlifeDirect was founded by Dr Richard Leakey to build an online community of people who care about wildlife. We launched our operations by bringing to world's attention the critical situation facing one of the world's most popular great apes, the mountain gorilla, in the Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo using rangers blogs from the frontline of conservation. Since then, WildlifeDirect has expanded its portfolio to support projects that conserve bonobos, chimpanzees and orangutans - as well as other wildlife and ecosystems - in many different countries.

This blog brings you the best of day to day news from these conservation projects written by field based conservationists in Africa and Southeast Asia who are working tirelessly to save great apes. Through this partnership with National Geographic, we aim to spread awareness about all the threats facing great apes, and to create opportunities for anyone anywhere to help save these beautiful and majestic creatures.
