| | Comments (6)
Here's a list of the content issues that our development team is aware of and working on for the next update of The Complete National Geogrphic: 120 years:

  • April 1953: Correct cover is displayed but contains content of April 1954.
  • July 1960: First advertising page is missing and replaced by a duplicated from page 11.
  • January 1977: Two pages are missing from the Jan 1977 advertising section. The first is the nomination page and the second is half of two pages for Cadillac.
  • February 1993: Pages 72-73 are missing and replaced by duplicated pages 78-79.
  • March 1996: Page 35 is missing.
  • December 2003: The bottom line of photo caption on page 125 is partially cut-off.
  • 1995 - 2008: Missing maps (e.g., The "Jerusalem's Holy Ground" map is missing in the Dec 2008 issue.)
  • Test My Knowledge question #10: "Tokyo" is misspelled.
If you come across any other issues, please post them here so that we can make sure the team is aware.   Thanks!

Already copied the DVDs manually?

| | Comments (6)

If  you've already copied your DVDs to an internal or external hard drive using a manual method, please note that if you upgrade to Version 1.26 of the Complete National Geographic software, you'll want to take the following steps to make sure the program is looking in the correct place for your copied files:

  1. Go to "Preferences" on the navigation menu at the top of your screen.
  2. Click on "Install Options".
  3. Click on "Browse".
  4. Choose the directory where you previously copied the DVDs.  Some example locations on an internal hard drive are below (be sure to replace "username" with your own user name):
  • OSX:  /Users/username/Library/Preferences/com.nationalgeographic.products.cng120.68B1CC4249876152EBE333BD4B7514ADB4D94062.1/Local Store/cache
  • WinXP: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\com.nationalgeographic.products.cng120.68B1CC4249876152EBE333BD4B7514ADB4D94062.1\Local Store\cache
  • Vista/Win 7
    • C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\com.nationalgeographic.products.cng120.68B1CC4249876152EBE333BD4B7514ADB4D94062.1\Local Store\cache
    • C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\com.nationalgeographic.products.cng120.68B1CC4249876152EBE333BD4B7514ADB4D94062.1\Local Store\cache
    • C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Loca\com.nationalgeographic.products.cng120.68B1CC4249876152EBE333BD4B7514ADB4D94062.1\Local Store#SharedObjects
5. Click "Apply" and "Ok".
6. To test, go back to the Welcome Menu and click on "Browse by Year".
7: Click on any year.
8. Click on "Read Issue" of the magazine in the center of the carousel.
9. If you're able to read the issue, The Complete National Geographic is looking in the correct directory that you chose, and you're ready to enjoy The Complete National Geographic!

A Windows 7 user reported that she was unable to change the default directory after manually copying the discs and updating the software.  The problem was resolved using these steps:
  • Uninstall the program using Windows Uninstall.
  • Delete all associated National Geographic files (search your hard drive for terms like natgeo, CNG, and Complete National Geographic).  DO NOT DELETE THE IMAGE FILES THAT YOU COPIED PREVIOUSLY (discs 1-6).
  • Download the latest version of the program using this link: CNG Most Recent Version
  • Run the program.  You should now be able to change the default directory if needed.

Incomplete Install Issue: No need to uninstall

| | Comments (7)

For those of you who may have had difficulty installing The Complete National Geographic, resulting in a partially installed program (it won't start, or it won't allow you to re-install), there is no need to uninstall the program as described earlier in the FAQ Instead, just delete the natgeo_temp folder in your home folder.  Then you'll be able to re-install the program.

  • Vista & Win7 Users: this folder is usually found at C:\Users\username\natgeo_temp.
  • WinXP Users:  this folder is usually found at C:\Documents and Settings\username\natgeo_temp.
(Remember to replace "username" with your own user name when looking for this folder.)

After deleting this folder, you should be able to reinstall the program as described in the FAQ, following one of the options below:

  • For users with high speed broadband access:
  1. Go to: www.nationalgeographic.com/updates/products/cng120/ClickToInstall.html
  2. Run The Complete National Geographic web installer. This has the latest version of Adobe Air, as well as the latest version of The Complete National Geographic.
  3. The Complete National Geographic can now be launched.

  • For users with inconsistent or slower broadband access:
  1. Disconnect your computer from the Internet -- unplug the network cable and disable any wireless networking.
  2. Install The Complete National Geographic, using your DVDs or The Complete National Geographic hard drive.
  3. Reconnect your computer to the Internet. (At some point later, the AIR runtime will automatically detect that an update is available.  When you're prompted to download it, it's safe to apply this update.)
  4. Launch The Complete National Geographic and click "Preferences" on the menu bar at the top of your screen. If you have v1.22 or lower, click on "Check for Updates Now" > "Check for Updates" > "Download Now". This will ensure that you're running the latest version of The Complete National Geographic.

  • Alternate method for users with inconsistent or slower broadband access:
  1. Before beginning the re-install, download and install the latest AIR runtime directly from the Adobe website  (http://get.adobe.com/air/).
  2. Install The Complete National Geographic from your DVDs or The Complete National Geographic hard drive, but be sure to choose the "Don't upgrade AIR Runtime" option. (This may sound misleading, but you've already downloaded the latest version in step 1.)
  3. Now the application will install correctly.
  4. Launch The Complete National Geographic and click "Preferences" in the menu bar at the top of your screen.  If you have v1.22 or lower, click on "Check for Updates Now" > "Check for Update"s > "Download Now". This will ensure that you're running the latest version of The Complete National Geographic.
