Windows Users Alert: Potential Install Issue

| | Comments (45)
We've identified a bug in the software which was introduced after the release due to an Adobe Air software upgrade.

Issue:
The installation problem may occur on WinXP, Vista or Windows 7 systems leaving the application partially installed when:

1) The AIR runtime is being installed for the first time.

2) The system has Internet access

To prevent or address this issue; please take one of the following precautionary steps:

Workaround A: For Users with High Speed Broadband Access (Greater than 2Mbps)

1.  Download the full installer by going to:

Full Web Installer

Or copy and past the following URL into your browser:

http://www.nationalgeographic.com/updates/products/cng120/ClickToInstall.html

2.  Run the Complete National Geographic web installer.   (This has the latest version of Adobe Air and the latest version of The Complete National Geographic: 120 Years)

Workaround B: For Users With Inconsistent or Slower Broadband Access

1.  Disconnect the computer from the Internet. Unplug the network cable and disable any wireless networking.

2.  Install the Complete National Geographic application as usual (from DVD or hard drive).

3.  Reconnect the computer to the Internet.    At some point later, the AIR runtime will detect that an update is available, and that it is now safe to apply this update.

4.  Launch the Complete National Geographic application and go to "Preferences."  If you have v1.22 or lower, click on Check for Updates Now>Check for Updates>Download Now.    This will ensure you have the latest version of The Complete National Geographic.

Workaround C: For Users With Inconsistent or Slower Broadband Access)

1. Install the latest AIR runtime from the web (http://get.adobe.com/air/)

2. Install the Complete National Geographic application, but be sure to choose the "Don't upgrade AIR Runtime" option. (Note that the dialog text is misleading, since it is asking you about upgrading the runtime, even though selecting yes would actually be downgrading to an older version.)

3. Now the application will install correctly.

4. Launch the Complete National Geographic application and go to "Preferences."  If you have v1.22 or lower, click on Check for Updates Now>Check for Updates>Download Now.    This will ensure you have the latest version of The Complete National Geographic.

I used the web installer but the with the first DVD I cannot read the magazines it contains. I have left two messages on the tech support phone line and I have sent many emails with NO RESPONSE.

I bought this at the Washington DC museum store. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME HOW I CAN RETURN THIS FOR A FULL REFUND. It simply does not work. I do not live in DC.

Windows XP Pro, 3.2 ghz Duo Core, 4 gigs of RAM.

Darrell, if you have "a set of old DVDs for Windows 98" then that set is probably the CD version issued between 1997-2003. That does not require Adobe Air nor will that version work on many of the newer computer operating systems.

CNG Support Team said:

Sorry, Richard. Once we have found a reason why some CNG users cannot print, we will certainly post it here.

Trying again!
I'm taking my CNG back to Costco for a refund. If you ever get the peinting problem fixed, let me know and I'll consider repurchasing.
Still not response from you.

I have a set od DVDs for windows 98 and I can't get them to install on my Windows XP machine. I tried the online installation with the new Adobe, but that didn't work either. Any advice?

Thanks, Darell

I have complained to customer support for months about not being able to get the CNG installed... they suggested it was Adobe Air out of date. NOT! Then they stopped replying to my emails!... I can't believe how BAD NG software is! I bough the first version on this, years ago, on several CDs, and had problems... bought other software for my kids... and had problems... Total customer satisfaction disregard, bad customer support... i have also tried --- since it can't be fixed! --- to get a refund... i hit a brick wall!i find it hard to believe this is NG I am commenting on!... but that's the truth and frustration keeps piling up!!!

Donna, not sure what you mean. Everyone's comments are reviewed we publish them (to prevent spam, etc.). What problem did you want to discuss?

Will not let me submit my comment?
I gave all details and you won't let me post that you have not corrected the problems.

What is the delay in responding to my request for assistance? You may have a good application but the problems with instillation are inexcuseable.

Is nat. geo coming out with something that has all the corrections so it will load properly? I received this for christmas and can't load it, after reading all the comments it sounds impossible. Can I return this and get a new copy with corrections. Was really looking forward to seeing this. Thanks, jane shellhorn

I just wanted to say that while I was extremely disappointed that I could not install my CNG from the disks, I was thankful that the uninstaller was downloaded so that it was easily removed.
I came to this site and followed the first fix with little trouble (the installation screen was slow and every time I clicked on the screen it would reinstall the initial set up). Starting up the installation process was very slow (I have a fast download speed). The "I agree" button is difficult to get to work, but I didn't have any real trouble to get the CNG to install. I am running Vista, which I have to say is worse than anything that CNG could be like. I also had no problems when it said to insert Disk 1.
I do like the features that I have used so far, the loop is great and it is nice to have the choice to browse the articles or read them prior to opening the magazine. I really love it.
I would prefer to have something that cost this much at least install without having to search out the problem first. I know that it was because of an upgrade of a related software, but it would have been nice if a sticker had been applied to the front of the box warning us of the trouble considering you have known about the problem for at least a month. I know mine was not ordered until at least the 10th of December. A more permanent fix would be to redo Disk 1 and send it out to all of those who have ordered the set since the upgrade that messed everything up and replacing the disk in all the sets that have not shipped yet. It can become irritating if I want to put it on my other household computers.

I don't know what URL means. but I am having the same problems as those above. I have Windows Vista Ultimate - this just is not up to Nat'l Geographic Standards, even the Bonus disc is non NTSC-PAL, made for any country but US/Canada. The box says for US distribution. Help?

Your installer fails on my Windows XP machine. I just spent on Christams Day 3 hours trying in every way to install this software. Every time I get the same message that "there has been an error" and that the application will exit now . . .!!!
Great piece of software you put out there for $60!!!
How do you justify this product?

SAM said:

Installation disc doesn't work and I have followed all the instructions here:

The 120 years of Nat'l Geo DVD sets should all be recalled. You should be ashamed to try to avoid these quality issues by publishing "fixes" on line that you know most customers will not be able to do. You are Nat'l Geographic - you are supposed to stand for Quality. Do the right thing.

I had Adobe Air, but not the latest version according to your disk. Latest version downloaded, and every effort to run program resulted in error. Then tried the download install above, which gave me a confusing (classy looking)options page. Simple searches failed to produce. Help. Please call me 7037514582l Also, can i load it on both my xp desktop and vista laptop?

ramin said:

hi,

I tried both workarounds for my win xp installation and still no luck, i bypass the dvd access by clicking alt ok but when i try to access the files from HD it does not load just shows be patient the page is loading and nothing is happening . note that i haved copied all discs to cache folder according your instructions. I guess it has something to do with the speed of your internet .

thanks Ramin

Roger, we apologize that this initial release has not been as user friendly to install as we'd like it to be. Let us know what you are having problems with and we will assist you here, in email or by telephone.

CNG Support Team said:

Anon -- have you tried again? Did you gett a particular message? The issue some people are having seems to relate to whether or not Adobe Air is already on one's computer. It shouldn't be; but if Adobe Air is already installed one might go directly to Step 2 or get some other error message. Let us know.
