The CNG Support Team, stood by this weekend ready to answer the questions and read the comments you all had after receiving and installing
The Complete National Geographic.
We saw three main categories of questions:
- Installation issues
- Whether photos could be rotated
- Copying DVDs to Hard Drives
Installation Issues
So far the questions raised about installation
have been disparate and sometimes required that we request more information from you. If you are having problems, please use the
Ask the CNG Support Team link in the left sidebar and provide as much information as possible. We will raise your issues to the Development Team, if we do not have an answer, and respond to you as quickly as possible.
Your questions may help us identify universal issues which can be addressed through simple instructions or in future product updates. We'd like to thank those of you who took the time to provide detailed emails and, in some cases, screen shots as we worked with you to sort out your problem.
Rotating PhotosFor those of you who asked whether there was a way to rotate landscape pictures, the answer is no. The content and photos were scanned as they were originally printed in
The National Geographic Magazine. Everything was scanned with the
binding vertical. There is no way to rotate pictures now and it will not be
a forthcoming update. There aren't any lawyers on the CNG Support Team, but we're sure the inability to rotate photos has to do with copyright agreements and such. We are not allowed to change much about the content
from the way it was originally published or scanned.
Copying DVDs to Hard Drives
A free update that will allow you to copy your DVDs to your Hard Drive will be available soon. Watch this blog for the announcement of its availability.

Yes! Please let us know when the "rotate" feature is released with an update! This will greatly improve the user experience. I have just been browsing various articles and have found the a rotate feature is absolutely necessary. This a great product and will be almost perfect with rotation!
Tom, see my comment to Mike. There will be rotation functionality.
Mike -- the inability to rotate content from horizontal to vertical is indeed a big issue and one that was raised to The CNG product and development teams. We confirmed last week that our initial information, that this was a copyright issue, was incorrect. The development team says that they plan to update the software with this functionality. We do not have a date yet; however, we will be updating the blog and keeping people posted here.
Not being able to rotate pictures / maps is the worst thing about this product. It's almost as bad as you description on why it can't be done. Since I can rotate the magazine to view a picture, I should be able to do the same with this software.
I would not have bought it had I known it lacked this ability, and I hope you reconsider adding the feature.
Rotating a picture is simply a manipulation in memory done by your software. The original file or scan is not modified. This simply cannot infringe on any copyright issue. Without the ability to rotate pages, about half the pictures of all the issues published in the '30s and '40s (probably other decades as well but I've just started discovering CNG) are almost impossible to view. Anybody will get serious neck and back pains after just a couple issues.
This is a serious flaw in an otherwise great product.
