System Requirements for The Complete National Geographic

| | Comments (13)

The Complete National Geographic uses a technology called Adobe AIR, which allows the same The Complete National Geographic software to run on various computer operating systems. The Complete National Geographic runs on Windows and Mac computers with the following system requirements:

An Internet connection is required for access to some of the features of The Complete National Geographic, including Geobrowse and software and content updates. The primary functions of the product are available without an Internet connection.

Windows

  • Intel® Pentium® III 1GHz or faster processor
  • Windows 7, Windows Vista® Home Premium, Business, Ultimate, or Enterprise including 64 bit editions, Windows Vista SP1, Windows XP Tablet PC Edition SP2 and SP3, Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Windows 2000 SP4, Windows 2003 Server
  • 512MB of RAM

Mac OS X

  • Intel Core™ Duo 1.83GHz or faster processor
  • Mac OS X 10.4.11* or Mac OS X 10.5.4 and 10.5.5
  • 512MB of RAM

Note: Adobe is withdrawing support for PowerPC. Therefore, PowerPC users will not be able to receive Adobe Air updates.

*Please see other entry regarding DVD installation on Mac 10.4.x machines.

It runs on Linux without wine. Some instructions on how to get it to run are here. So far it's been pretty stable and good enough that I don't mind reading with it.

Jim, due to content licensing issues a network installation option will probably not be available. We have raised this question to The CNG product team and will let you know if this information changes.

Your system requirements do not include a DVD drive. While this may seem obvious, my wife uses a netbook without an attached DVD player although one is available via a network connection. However, your installation application does not recognize a network attached DVD player. Will the option be made available (or will you change your system requirements).

Rob, your version of The Complete National Geographic (CD version) does not require Adobe Air; however, it may not work on the latest computer operating systems.

Please inform when possible: Is any or a particular version of Adobe AIR all that is needed to run the set of National Geograpic Magazine on Windows 95 Cd's on my Pentium Win XP system? Seconds, if Adobe AIR is all that is required, after installing it, is there a specific install disc(s)in the NGS CD set which I will need to use to initiate the installation?

Thanks for taking time to assist me.

Rob

The application runs fine in the latest version of Wine, with two quirks for me:

1) When installing, the installer froze a couple times, but simply restarting the installer eventually allowed it to get past the freezes and successfully install.

2) On first run, there is a dialog box asking you to confirm the EULA, but the buttons to accept or refuse the agreement are not displayed. It took me a few tries of clicking parts of the window frame, then hitting Tab and Spacebar before I managed to click the invisible Okay button.

After that, the application itself ran quite well. There were two issues, which I don't know if they relate to Wine or a bug in the application, but the online map feature did not work, saying it couldn't connect or whatever. Also the updater which I tried showed itself downloading the latest version and installing it, but after it restarted, the Help > About still showed the old version number. Not sure if the update worked or not, but I guess not.

Hi. Does anyone knows if the CNG can work on a computer with Linux, Desktop, OS ?
What is the content format [e.g. PDF, HTML, etc] of the CNG?
As it seems from above the CNG needs a software called Abode Air, this can be put on Linux [http://get.adobe.com/air/]. is that all the CNG needs to run? or does it require something specific to Windows or Mac?
Thanks for any Help

I'm having a lot of problems with this CD set. I have a Macbook Pro with Mac OS 10.6.2. with a 2.6 MHz intel core 2 duo and 4Gb of RAM.

- when I switched disks, it didn't recognize new disk, just kept asking for disk to be inserted.

- got stuck on page in Nov 1960 issue and then no more pages would load.

Roland, The Complete National Geographic has not tested THE CNG 120 Years on Linux systems so it cannot certify that the product will operate correctly with Linux.

Is there any way which someone using a Linux based operating system could use the new veriosn of the Complete National Geographic by using Wine?
