Printing Content from the Complete National Geographic

While reading an article, you can print the current spread (the two displayed pages) or just the left or right page. Pictures embedded in an article page cannot be extracted and printed separately. Beginning in November, National Geographic will enable a "print article" feature in The Complete National Geographic, which will allow users to print a full article.

I can only print the bottom half of the page. I have Windows XP and an Epson NX415 printer. Is there a solution to this problem yet?

I cannot print to an HP OfficeJet printer.

However, I can print to a PDF file using freeware called CutePDF. Then print out the pdf file just fine.

is there a way to print larger than 8.5" x 11"?

Shannan, the option to print specific parts of a map are not available at this time. It's a good idea and we'll raise it to the development team. As for the other issue you report, are you referring to pages loading slowly when you refer to "limbo screens" or pages that load but the photo loads more slowly? We'd need more information to assist you. Please use the "Ask the CNG Support Team" link in the left sidebar of the CNG Support Hub page.

Regarding printing, what I'm interested to know is if it is possible to print parts of maps "actual size". The previous Nat geo map "8 CDROM" set was great. A user could flip over a map to see the back, and you could print maps full size and the magnification was so detailed it would show the grain of the paper it was so high. Also a navigator window showed where you were using a thumb nail of the whole map. I'm surprised adobe didn't retain such features. This implementation seems a quite buggy. I find I have to restart CNG to get past limbo screens - screens where CNG was going to show me a page image, but goes off to make a cup of tea or something instead. I also get limbo moments when it should show magazine content on hover on the cover carousel. Sometimes it does, sometimes doesn't. Restarts fix this problem too. Is Adobe air just too complicated?

Everyone, here's what we have so far on the printing issues. The issues are NOT printer specific, but seem to be related to how some users' systems communicate with Adobe Air (and the issue is not exclusive to The Complete National Geographic product according to what is reported in Adobe Air feedback forums). A recent February Adobe Air update was meant to fix some of these issue, so you might want to update your Adobe Air. We hope to have more information about steps to take to check for and resolve any system conflicts with Adobe Air soon. As always we apologize for any disappointment and frustration you are experiencing because of this issue.

It has been 5 months and still no solution for printer problem.

Should I return this product for a refund?

CNG Support Team said:

John, the printing problem is not experienced by all users and is not specific to certain printers, but the team is working hard to discover why some are experiencing the problems, which we believe is related to Adobe Air. As soon as we have answers we will post them here. We know it's frustrating.

CNG Support Team said:

The printing issue for some of our users is a known issue and one for which we are still seeking a solution. It does not seem to be printer specific and is probably related to Adobe Air. We're still trying to find a solution for you.

Sre you people going to solve the printing problem?
I am about to send my DVD set back for a refund.
Will any of the screen capture programs (snagit) capture what is on the screen and then print it?

I just tried to print (outputting to a PDF) several articles and I only get the top half of the page.

I have the same problem for printing as other people in this blog.

I can't print anything.

The previews of my printer are blank.

My OS : Windows XP SP3
My printer : Dell 3100cn

Please fix this!

Does everyone have a problem printing blank pages. I've tried all the updates and suggestions and no change- just blank pages.
No response from CNG

I have same problem. Printing just gives me a blank page. I have Windows 7, a new HP laptop, and an HP printer 932 C, which works fine otherwise. I've tried all your fixes and nothing changes.
What now?

Rich Keller said:

I have a HP G60-530US laptop, and HP 932C printer, using Windows 7.
Trying to print--just spits out blank pages. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling, updating the software to no avail.
What's the fix?
I thought about taking the package back to Costco for another exchange, but it looks as if it's a problem with the CNG.

Has anyone been able to get this product to print yet? I am using HP LaserJet printers P4015x and 5550dn. I can't seem to get any feedback from my email inquiries. I'd like to know where NG is with a solution to this problem.

CNG Support Team said:

Thanks for that info, George. We hope to have a solution soon.

George Davis said:

I have the exact same printer and problem as Frank, January 21st. All I can add is this printer performs perfectly on all my other programs.

CNG Support Team said:

Melanie, would you mind using the "Ask the CNG Support Team" link in the left sidebar to let us know what printer you have and the other info we request? We're trying to track this problem, which seems to be related to Adobe Air.

melanie said:

Well, at least I'm not alone. I have been pulling my hair out trying to troubleshoot this program. Definitely not worth the money for the time it has taken to work with it besides the fact that it's not useful because I need to be able to print the articles!

I, too, was able to download to pdf, but only half of the page prints.

Hopefully, NG will support the product with some sort of solution soon.

ML, the issue is related to Adobe. Hoping to have some help for those of you who are having print problems soon!

ml said:

Yikes, can't believe that this program has such difficulty printing. I have the original Complete National Geographic on CD-Rom also, maybe I should go back to that instead of this Adobe Air setup...

I wanted to print to pdf because its easier/quicker to read. I have a full version of Acrobat so I used the print function to print to PDF. The bottom portion of every page gets cut off. Is it a NatGeo problem or an Adobe Air problem?? Workaround for me: Print to xps and then using the xps viewer print to pdf. What a pain.

Frank Dionne said:

I too cannot print anything !Q Epson Photo R200 printer. Selected page(s) go to printer queue, printer makes preliminary motions like its going to print, then stops when it is time to print the page. Page also deletes from printer queue at that time. VERY DISAPPOINTED IN THE PRODUCT> It is almost too complicated for its own good! I have also tried printing to a PDF....that doesn't work either!

adidor said:

Have you tried printing into a PDF printer first? there are some free apps out there.

Shawn said:

I can get the items to print, but when I print maps it always cuts the borders off. I'll only get the middle part of the map but none of the edges are there. I even clink on 'fit to page' and it still only prints the middle part of the map. Any ideas?

Bob Harshberger said:

So when can we expect a solution to the printing problems? They seem to be very widespread.

Lionel said:

Prints blank pages for me too on XP tablet edition SP2. Is this really ready for prime time? Why not use acrobat or another std document viewer instead of building something not as usable and full of bugs?

Same issue: printer spits blank pages. Running Windows 7 home 64 bit and using an HP Officejet 6310. Frustrating!

I could print (and still I can) the previous Adobe PDF version (109 years)from a desktop working with Windows 98. So maybe, is there a relation with the fact that the new edition is not in PDF but runs with AIR Adobe ?

I am having the same printing issue in addition to problems zooming in on pages, and other 1990s-type code issues too numerous to mention. Not to sound rude, but you really need to test this software before you start marketing it with glitzy ad campaigns. Something like this is only as good as you say it is if it works. Otherwise, it's nothing more than smoke in mirrors. The result is nothing more than a very anticlimactic experience for the consumer.

Personally, I buy compilations like this for the information only. With that said, I'd prefer a very barebones interface with Adobe Acrobat instead of all of these cosmetic search options and endless screens, which form a barrier between me and my investment in your product.

Bob Harshberger said:

I also cannot print content on either an HP 6127 or an Epson RX600. The paper passes but they are completely blank.

Steve Vlahos said:

Ditto what Rich said. I just installed CNG tonight and downloaded the 1.23 update. I have Vista Home Premium with an HP 6122 deskjet printer. I am also losing the top 1 and 1/2 inches of the print out. Other than that it prints out nicely. There really are no preview features either that I can find. I would like to be able to size or crop the photo too.

Rich Strecker said:

In trying to print pages from my Vista OS I encounter the same problem as others I read about. I tried both an Epson printer and a HP printer. While trying to print pages from an Windows XP OS on a different computer, the page skips down and cuts off printing the top 1 and 1/2 inches of the page while the rest of the page prints fine. I have changed paper sizes, margins etc on the printer and got the same result.

CNG Support Team said:

Mark, thanks for the details in your two comments. There seem to be, IMHO, some specific make/model printer issues based on the feedback we're getting, so this is a known issue that we're working on now.

Mark Tobias said:

RE my post a couple minutes ago, I didn't mention, OS here is XP Home SPIII, TCNG v. 1.23 build 912, though this same failure existed before I downloaded and installed this latest version. I didn't test the failure with a different PC or OS.

Mark Tobias said:

Same problem the others said. This printer is Epson Photo R280. I have experimented with changing all of the printer's preferences one at a time - like spooling vs. printing directly to printer; color profiles; color modes; quality options - no effect. Preview ON shows the page blank. I can find no options in your software's user controls that matter - happens with all print options choices - though the "print article" option spits out all pages as form feeds. I also have replicated this same problem with the NGdB on DVD, and read from HD in the current user cache as you explain on your pages here, and also by redirecting input from HD via a batch file and the DOS subst command - eg., subst p: o:\NGdB The same failure - just does a form feed - also occurs with the Epson Color 880 and the Epson Stylus CX9400Fax printer also attached to this server. I am a software engineer and at this point I am concluding the problem is in your engine.

Folks, we're trying to determine whether the printing issues some are experiencing are specific to certain printers, operating systems or the CNG software.
