The Complete National Geographic - 120 years of National Geographic Magazine at your fingertips in stunning digital clarity

"Looking for Disc" and "Please Insert Disc #..." Messages

| | Comments (14)

The Complete National Geographic cannot read any content from a DVD until the computer can recognize the DVD. To be sure your computer can recognize the DVD inserted, go to My Computer>DVD Drive Letter: The Complete National Geographic. Until the DVD drive says "The Complete National Geographic" or "insert Mac name here," the application will not be able to display the requested content.

I copied all 6 DVD's to the hard drive, and it worked fine. Later, I did an upgrade of Adobe Air, and after that the software keeps asking me to insert DVD X. What do I do? Do I have to uninstall and reinstall and then move the folders of the 6 DVD's again (which I would previously move to, say, my Desktop)?
Thanks.

What's the deal with the disks used in this program? The computer I want to use only recognizes disk 1 not the others. I struggled to get disk 1 to be recognized and it's still balky, taking a couple of tries sometimes. Another new computer can't recognize any of them and a third much older computer owned by the person who gifted me this DVD set reads them just fine... but that does ME no good. I have windows Vista on the newer computers.

Regarding installation to external HD. This is rather simple to do but very, very time consuming. The first thing you want to do is goto Adobe.com and download the latest Adobe Air and install it. I had an old external HDD I wasn't using anylonger and did a fresh format on it. (I wanted the drive clean) ..then using windows explorer.. I took each disc one at a time and copied them to the external HDD. (This is VERY time consuming ... it took over 2 hrs for each disc to complete) Make sure you copy the install files from disc 1. Disc's 2 - 6 you just need copy the disc file. You are better off dragging the file to your external HDD rather than copy and paste it. Once all the discs are copied ... the directory on the external drive should have some install files and directories Disc 1, Disc 2, etc. Now you are ready to install. Remove all discs, you don't need them any longer and plug in your external HDD. Use windows explorer and find the setup file on the external HDD and double click. The installation process will start. Install to the default director which will be C: drive. (this will be a small install) This may take 5 mins or more depending on your virus protection and how it searches files. When the install is done make sure you choose finish before you start the program. After you choose finish then go to desktop and double click the National Geographic Icon that was created on your desktop. The program will start. BEFORE you start searching ... choose check for updates...if one is found, download it and install. (it will close the program and install auto once the download is complete) ...After the upgrade is complete (this may take 5 mins or more too) the program will restart ... you are now ready to enjoy ... if you get the message put in disc just ignore and click ok ... the program should find the files you need on the external HDD. I've used this process on both my laptop and desktop and works flawlessly. (Both are running Windows 7 ..my laptop windows 7 home premium 64bit ...and my desktop windows 7 ultimate 32 bit) Hope this helps ...just be patient..it takes a day just to copy the files.

Disk 1 would not install so I did install from web. After launching the NG application and searching and finding an article, I insert Disk 3 as requested (and it shows up as a NG disk in My Computer) the application does not recognize the content of the disk and keeps asking me to "Insert Disk 3". In addition, Eject and depressing the button on the drive will not release the drive door - I must use paper clip to open the drive.

I wish to install CNG on to an external hard drive. This will enable me to use the CNG with either one of three PCs, desktop, netbook, notebook.

The HDD has ample space for CNG and in fact I have copied all the discs to it already. The problem is I cannot get CNG to recognize the "disc #X" as being on the HDD.

How can I get this installation to work?

I am experiencing the same problem as Mr. Brolly. I insert Disc. 1 into my hard drive and it is not recognized by the drive and nothing happens. Please help with 800 numbers, walk through assistance, etc.
Thank you

This is not a user friendly instal. I was not prompted to install by disk. I am using a PC with windows XP
The complete national geographic lets you select an issue, asks for disk 1 to be installed but will not recognize it. I do have a DVD Video symbel on my DVD Player. Is their some additional software that needs to be installed? Can you provide a 1-800 number so someone can walk me through this instalation?
Thank you

I copied the 6 disks into a folder, F:/CompleteNatGeo and entered that address in the Preferences as instructed but the software still requires me to read from the DVD's.

How do I get it to read from the hard disk?

Altho' my computer sees by disc drive and can read discs 2-6, it cannot read disc 1. I installed via the internet but the problem persists.

When trying to place the CNG images onto a HD attached to my computer the "copy content" comand button does not work. That window INSTALL OPTIONS accepts my indication for a drive/folder but the COPY CONTENT button does not lead to any action. How then can I copy the DVDs contents to a HD either local or a USB HD driver?
Hope to hearing from you
