Friends and colleagues Sarah Caban (editor of the My Wonderful World blog) and Maggie Strassman (intern and University of Wisconsin Madison geography department superstar) have lined up a bevy of fired-up contributors for the first annual Geography Awareness Week Blog-a-Thon. The week, which runs through Saturday, coincides with the National Geographic Channel’s Expedition Week, and highlights the importance of geographic literacy and geography education in the United States.

Someone to Watch Over You

Conservationist, marine biologist, and NatGeo Fellow Enric Sala and I drove to Dulles, Virginia on Friday to visit GeoEye headquarters. The company manages a fleet of Earth imaging satellites, including IKONOS and GeoEye-1, which traverse the globe from pole to pole every 90 minutes 423 miles (681 kilometers) overhead.

Full Moon Rises on Google Earth

African Wildlife Safari in Google Earth

Over the past four years, he's published thousands of posts about the latest features in, and innovative uses for, Google's 3D virtual globe. Given Frank's ringside seat on geo-technology and the planet, I was eager to meet him!

Crown of the Continent

I just left a meeting with Jonathan Tourtellot and Ann Nygard, both with National Geographic's Center for Sustainable Destinations.

Like many of us here, they lie awake nights pondering how to tell stories with maps. They're also striving to conserve the unique character of places.
