| Comments (0)
Glimpse Photo ContestThe deadline for Traveler's World in Focus Photo Contest has passed, and we've received some fantastic entries and are eager to see the results.

But if you're still feeling like you're up for a photo challenge, let us point you in the direction of our friends over at Glimpse, which are hosting one of their own. Their "Cultural Explorers" contest is seeking images of people working or volunteering abroad, interacting with locals, and/or participating in a cultural practice. Winners will receive a $250 travel voucher, and all entries must be received by September 15.

Traveler and Photo District News are currently hosting our annual World in Focus Photo Contest, and this year we're letting readers preview the submissions and vote for their favorites. Each week, we're putting a new batch of images up on our website. Here's today's pic:

contest-wk15-07-600.jpgThis photo, "She Dreams of Riding Horses," was submitted by Elizabeth Griffin. The caption reads that the little girl is "riding her grandmother's pony at Ruidoso Downs, New Mexico." That's one massive pony, and we can't help but think it calls for a caption contest. Ready? Go!

Think your own photo brings the world into focus? Submit your entries now for a chance to win a trip to Tanzania, camera gear, and other prizes. But hurry! The extended deadline is September 8.

The Great Outdoors Photo Contest Grand Prize Winner
We're very pleased to announce the winner of our Great Outdoors Photo Contest!

Our Grand Prize winner, Eric Heistand, of Valle Crucis, North Carolina
won a five-night stay for two at Mandarin Oriental Riviera Maya Hotel in Mexico, including breakfast daily, one dinner for two at Ambar restaurant, and two aromatherapy massage treatments.

In an effort to preserve the natural beauty of his area, Heistand took a group of college students on a mission trip to Trash Can Falls just outside of Boone, North Carolina. The popular swimming hole had become overrun with trash and debris. Heistand and the group collected over 20 large bags of waste.

This winning photograph depicts the group's celebration after restoring the falls.  It ". . . strikes a beautiful balance of spontaneity and redemption," said Heistand.

Heistand has been photographing since college. "Not owning professional equipment for all of those years forced me to learn good composition techniques and to look for natural drama to fill my frames," he said. He uses a Nikon D80, Tamron 18-200mm lens.

After considering images taken by a wealth of talented amateur photographers, the judges chose these five winners in Traveler's second-annual Great Outdoors Photo Contest.

Think you're up for a photo challenge? You can still submit entries to our World in Focus Photo Contest through August 24.

botswanabook.jpgAlexander McCall Smith's No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency book series has been hugely popular since it was first published in 2003. To date there are some ten books in the series, which follows private detective Mma Ramotswe, as well as an HBO series, now airing in the U.S. on Sundays at 8 p.m.

Now the Botswana Tourism Board is turning to Smith's series to give folks a chance to win a trip for two to Botswana. Now through April 19, check out mynumberonelady.com and submit a 300-word essay on your "no. 1 lady," be it your mom, sister, aunt, friend, etc. (just make sure you like the person enough to go on an 8-day safari with). Female entrants who can't think of a better "no 1. lady" can even nominate themselves. After you submit your essay, read the others and vote for your favorite. Reader votes don't determine the winners, but they do play a hand in the final voting (see official contest rules for more details).
